Where’s the focus?

One of the mantra’s I live my life by is, “Focus on what you can control.” In the craziness of our lives we really only have the energy and the time to focus on where we have direct control of the inputs and therefore the outputs. We get so caught up in “stuff” that does not concern us, has no meaning to us, no bearing on our goals, our dreams and what we want to be or have in our lives. Why? Well we, may at times feel out of control, we may not want to be in control, we may not have the capacity to focus or we may not have a clue how to narrow our focus, not knowing what is important. Does this sound familiar? It happens in our personal lives – it happens in our work lives – we lose focus or focus on the wrong things. As always awareness is the key to change and development. Read the article to follow and find out what and who you are focused on and if it is serving you.

What are you focused on?

1. Results

Are you focused on the results that you want in your personal life or in a team or in a company for that matter? Do you have:

  • Clear and specific goals/objectives/expectations
  • Measurement tools
  • High priority activities to achieve results everyday
  • Solutions to anticipated obstacles
  • Support

OR are you focused on…

2. Justifying why you are not achieving the results

Recognising that you do the following:

  • Inflate others faults to justify why you cannot achieve what you want, the team or the company wants
  • Inflate your own virtue and by doing that take on the role as the victim
  • Blame people, systems, processes, procedures…

Use the points listed under Results to get you back to being focused on what is important to you!

Who are you focused on?

1. Yourself

Are you only concerned with how you achieve the results you want and in order to do that you will view others in your life, your team or the company as objects that do not have hopes, dreams, goals, objectives and expectations that are important. By doing this, you run the risk of alienating others and ‘running the race’ on your own. How is that working for you?

OR…

2. Others

Do you engage and connect with others to get results in your life, in a team or in a company? Do you have the capacity to understand that other peoples hopes, dreams, goals, objectives and expectations may serve you if you take the time to communicate and understand what they are focused on and how you can work together to achieve it. Are you able to give sincerely in order to get?

“I don’t care how much power, brilliance or energy you have, if you don’t harness it and focus it on a specific target, and hold it there, you’re never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants.”
